Meetup: All About Sencha Touch 2:

We’ll have an overview of Sencha Touch and a discussion of what’s new in version 2, along with a demo or two showing off some of the latest stuff.

We’ll also have special guest Truong-An Thai, the lead web developer at Flocasts here in town, demoing and discussing Flosports, the Sencha Touch app he built and deployed to the Apple and Google app stores. Should be a good one!

SenchaCon 2011 Videos Posted

At the meetup last week I mentioned that the videos from the conference would be posted soon, and sure enough they were just opened up today for public consumption. Check out the album on Vimeo.

There are almost 70 videos in total so there is a lot to choose from, but I thought I’d point out a few of the most relevant to the topics of Ext 4.1, Sencha Touch 2 and Designer 2, since that’s what we discussed in the meetup:

Help us welcome the new year by meeting with other Senchans on Tuesday, January 10. We’ll be reviewing the upcoming changes in Ext JS 4.1, Sencha Touch 2.0 and Designer 2.0, with demos to show off some of the interesting new bits. Note that this meeting is the second Tuesday due to the holidays — we’ll get back to our normal schedule next month.

Oct-Nov / SenchaCon Meetup:

Our regular Oct and Nov meetups will be combined into a single meetup centered around SenchaCon, since it happens to be in Austin this year. The meetup will be held on Tuesday evening, Oct. 25 at 6:30pm at the Hilton downtown.

All are welcome!

Although I would encourage everyone in the meetup group to also attend the conference if possible (last year’s conference was a blast) it’s not required to attend the meetup. It will be a social event geared toward meeting the folks behind Sencha’s tools and services (and generally socializing and having a good time). I hope everyone can make it!

While looking at simple demos and examples can be helpful, it’s often much more interesting and instructive to see how other people are actually implementing new technologies in the real world. Come out and see fellow meetup member Lee Church demo how his company is implementing enterprise mobile solutions using the NS Basic framework in combination with Sencha Touch.

Survey Results

The results are in. By an overwhelming majority the group would prefer to meet on the first Tuesday of the month, and by a smaller but still clear majority would like to meet north-central around the Arboretum area. Here are how the results broke down:

Preferred night to meet

First Tuesday (57%)
Other (21%)
Last Thursday (14%)
Second Thursday (7%)
Fourth Thursday (0%)

Preferred part of town

Arboretum (43%)
North / Parmer (29%)
Downtown (21%)
No preference (7%)

First Tuesday was a very clear favorite. Downtown and North / Parmer were evenly split, but since Arboretum was still the favorite and splits the difference between the other two, that seems to be the best choice of location.

I had a few specific suggestions for venues that I’ll be looking into shortly, and will announce the details of the next meetup ASAP since it’s only a couple of weeks away based on our new schedule!

New Site & Meetup Survey

First off, welcome to the new site! The meetup.com space is still there, and will still be used for managing the meetups, but I wanted someplace different to be able to post more freely and provide additional resources outside of meetup planning. Please follow the blog to keep in touch!

Secondly, I’d like to make the meetup a more regular event, so I’ve created a very short survey to gauge opinions on the best time and place to meet on a monthly basis. The survey is only 4 questions, so I hope you’ll take a minute out of your busy day to provide feedback. As they say, speak now or forever hold your peace…
